Megafaunal Ecology of the Western Clarion Clipperton Zone

چکیده

The Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is a vast area of the central Pacific Ocean where abyssal seabed focus for future polymetallic nodule mining. Broad-scale environmental gradients occur east-to-west across CCZ seabed, including organic matter supply and abundance, factors that influence benthic faunal community structure function. A network protected areas CCZ, called Areas Particular Environmental Interest (APEIs), has been designated to cover this variation. Most previous studies environment megafaunal communities have focussed on eastern leaving impact these large-scale unexamined design untested. Seamounts are further source heterogeneity in region. We examined ecology three APEIs western spanning range conditions. used combination photography direct sampling assess megafauna soft sediment habitats plain APEIs, seamounts two those APEIs. found conditions plains differed between terms water depth, abundance coverage, particle size distribution, estimated flux. Megafauna were low density high diversity, with few common morphotypes sites many being observed only once. Xenophyophores dominated assemblages. diversity invertebrates greater at lower inputs abundance. same nodule-free had coarser sediments than plain. Invertebrate was plains, most recorded seamounts. Low morphotype overlap also suggests little connectivity adjacent plains. Our results provide first evaluation highlighting communities, important evaluating areas.

Megafauna of the UKSRL exploration contract area and eastern Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean: Echinodermata

BACKGROUND There is growing interest in mining polymetallic nodules from the abyssal Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Despite being the focus of environmental studies for decades, the benthic megafauna of the CCZ remain poorly known. In order to predict and manage the environmental impacts of mining in the CCZ, baseline knowledge of the megafauna is essential. The AB...

Abyssal fauna of the UK-1 polymetallic nodule exploration claim, Clarion-Clipperton Zone, central Pacific Ocean: Echinodermata

We present data from a DNA taxonomy register of the abyssal benthic Echinodermata collected as part of the Abyssal Baseline (ABYSSLINE) environmental survey cruise 'AB01' to the UK Seabed Resources Ltd (UKSRL) polymetallic-nodule exploration claim 'UK-1' in the eastern Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), central Pacific Ocean abyssal plain. Morphological and genetic data are presented for 17 species...

Insights into the abundance and diversity of abyssal megafauna in a polymetallic-nodule region in the eastern Clarion-Clipperton Zone

There is growing interest in mining polymetallic nodules in the abyssal Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the Pacific. Nonetheless, benthic communities in this region remain poorly known. The ABYSSLINE Project is conducting benthic biological baseline surveys for the UK Seabed Resources Ltd. exploration contract area (UK-1) in the CCZ. Using a Remotely Operated Vehicle, we surveyed megafauna at ...

An End-to-End DNA Taxonomy Methodology for Benthic Biodiversity Survey in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, Central Pacific Abyss

Recent years have seen increased survey and sampling expeditions to the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), central Pacific Ocean abyss, driven by commercial interests from contractors in the potential extraction of polymetallic nodules in the region. Part of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) regulatory requirements are that these contractors undertake environmental research expeditions to th...

We present the first DNA taxonomy publication on abyssal Mollusca from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), central Pacific ocean, using material collected as part of the Abyssal Baseline (ABYSSLINE) environmental survey cruise 'AB01' to the UK Seabed Resources Ltd (UKSRL) polymetallic-nodule exploration area 'UK-1' in the eastern CCZ. This is the third paper in a series to provide regional taxon...
